Mercruiser 260 shift

My I/O shifts beautifully into fwd- but reverse is delay- give it more throttle and it shifts into reverse but overkill since I have to give it more throttle to get it to shift into reverse - I have the Seloc book but it is pretty vague - any help is appreciated. It is a 260hp 2002 V8 with '87 Alpha outdrive.

Dave, read the section on shift cable adjustment, stick with the measurements and make sure the system is adjusted properly, If adjustment will not cure your problem, then most likly it will require replacement of the lower shift cable. this is a common problem with mercs..check out this web page it has a lot of good info on it, including the shift cable..... how do i
