OK I have one more question. When its in neutral and I spin the prop clockwise you can hear the faintest clicking! Not so much spinning the other way. Its not loud like when its in gear. Super quiet! Should it do that while in neutral? If not I wonder if that would have anything to do with my problem.

You just mentioned you have the drive off and then asked about the oil supply hole. So I take it you have it seperated in two parts. The lower half is the shift section of the drive. The shift foot coming out of the top front of the drive changes the direction of the prop. The kicking your hearing is the cone clutch almost it gear and could be forward or reverse. Move the shift foot on top clock wise and hold, then turn the prop counter clockwise and the upper shaft will turn. If you turn the prop clockwise you will hear clicking caused by the clutch slipping out. If the shift foot is turned counter clockwise and held the prop will be enganged in the clockwise direction.

Should it make any kind of click noise whatsoever when put back together in neutral? Before it was taken apart it would do this. Thought maybe a in proper cable adjustment could cause this.

Not sure of the clicking you're hearing but there should be a place where the shift foot can be truned and the clicking will go away. At this point the problem leading up to the damaged drive is not an issue for the shift cable adjustment.

The damage is probably in the upper half but the entire drive needs to come apart. Take the top off the upper half (one with the U-joints) and see what it looks like.
