Changed new Rotor cap and fuel pump.(Tell tale had fuel in it)
Noticed the engine was not running good after(Backfireing out of carb) and was not getting to plane before.

When I poked a rag in number 1 cylinder and got the engine on TDC ( Marks on bottom pulley line up perfect on 0 )

The rotor is pointing in the opposite direction of any cylinders, should this not be pointing to number 1? See pictures

Any thoughts would be helpful on what to do.

Thanks Mike

Turn the engine over one more revolution and you will see the marks line up then. The timing marks will line up twice for every one time that the rotor points to #1. You need to make sure you are on the compression stroke, and then line your mark up.

Just as a follow up - why did you replace just the rotor cap? Did you do a complete tune up? Then you will need to check and set the time. You need to be a little more specific on the engine you have in order to get a little more specific help.

Now its pointing to the number 2 cylinder,it should be pointing to number one 1 I thought.
Trying to make sure the plug wires are hooked up right.
1342 is firing order
Does anyone know how they go on this cap?

If all you replaced was the rotor cap, then nothing should have moved. If you turned the distributor body... then, yep you need to make sure it is pointed at #1. Again - what year, model number, etc? The timing procedure is going to be different for different years and ignition setups.

Yes - you have the firing order correct.

181 CID
Serial # OF065969
MOdel MCM 3.0L

Just tried that firing order above and all it does is backfire out of the carb while turning over

Don't take this the wrong way but the rotor should be pointing to #1 on the Distributor Cap NOT the Block.

Wrong picture?

Assume this is number one.

How old is the engine?

Is this a (DDIS) Digital Distributorless
Ignition System.

One of the manuals (#13) says then plug wires 1-4-3-2 on distributor cap.
(Firing order is still the same 1-3-4-2)

Don't blame me:cool:

Re: Mercruiser 3.0 cap not pointing to number 1 on TDC

Got the fireing order right....
Now I noticed its trying to start but like its flooding itself out.
Whne I looked in the carb, all I see is alot of gas (engine never ran just putted) dripping in and the carb quarter full of gas.

This is after I changed the fuel pump( Knew it was bad from gas in the tell tale)

BEcause of the new fuel pump, think a carb problem is showing up?

It ran better before I changed the fuel pump, just didnt have no planning power
