first timer and asking for brother. Brother bought 1986 forester with 3.0 for 1,500. Guy told him it needed fuel pump and had sat for a while. Put on new fuel pump and drained gas put in new. Went to lake started right up idled out of wake area and got on it, ran great for couple of hours then stalled. Started right back up gave it throttle and kept falling on its face. You can start it with the muffs at house and give it gas and its fine. At lake idles fine give it gas its on its face. Is this carburation trouble. Any information would be appreciated. THANX

Could be a simple as a clogged gas filter.

I'm not a mechanic... I don't even play one on TV but if you can rev the engine on land with the muffs on but it dies on the lake when it's in gear.... CHECK YOUR OUTDRIVE!

Is it putting too much strain on the engine and stalling it?

First I would want to check:

1. Point gap/dwell... install new quality set
2. Above affects timing, so after adjustment, check & set timing
3. Then I would put on lake under a load & test.
4. Same problem... then simple carb rebuild w/$15.00 kit & new float & I suggest "brass" float.

Depending on make/model of carb could be a Rochester 2bbl or Mercury(Japan) 2bbl model.

DO NOT trade-in/core for rebuilt carb unless damaged or cracked.

Good Luck
