Brand new to boating; just did my first oil change. After pumping out the old oil, I put back in the amount given to me by the local dealer with the boat level on the trailer. I even put a level on the floor of the boat to be sure. After putting the boat in the water, I did a recheck and it shows about 2 quarts over full. Probably a stupid question, but can you get an accurate reading in the water? Thanks for any input.

How much did you put in?? 4-5-6 qts?? This engine is rated at 4 qts with maybe a little more to fill up the filter..

The dealer recommended with the filter that he gave me to to five quarts. Thanks

How much did you get out and how did you remove it? You may not have gotten it all out if you sucked it via the dipstick.

When I put the oil in, I put in 4 qts and then add the extra qt as needed to make the dipstick right.

My guess is that you didn't get it all out..

As rogerwa said, 4 qts should be enough and an extra qts if you change the filter too. You cannot take a good measure if you are on the water and the boat is rocking. You would think that the boat would sit level in the water but many time it is not the case and could be the reason why it shows 2 qts over.

I did take it out thru the dipstick into a recycling container, so I'm not really sure how much came out. The dipstick checked fine even after the engine was warmed up and checked again to be sure. The amount only showed over the fill line after I put the boat in the water. Thanks

If it is calm in the water you should be pretty close to level to check the oil. You should abide by what the dipstick says. A little bit over is ok but 2 quarts is to much
