Hey Yall,

Getting set to get this oil pan swapped on this Mercruiser 3.0LX Pan gets here next week.

Looking at gaskets, and somehow these are now running $80 a pop, $100 after shipping. Seems pretty steep for a glorified rubber band.

Is there an automotive equivalent available? I've done some wheeler builds with just RTV. Any thoughts on doing that here?

My biggest misgiving is that I intend to rebuild rotating assembly after this first season with the boat, and I'd rather peel off a new gasket than scrub off cured RTV.

But I don't bill myself at $100/hr. Any other reasons I shouldn't use RTV?

Not trying to half a$$ keeping the oil in my engine.... but I don't see how an automotive gasket designed for higher temps, dirtier and arguably wetter conditions wouldn't be adequate for my cozy bilge.

I would advise against rtv, the P.O. of my boat rebuilt the lower end of the motor in my boat and used rtv. I had the motor out to do the transom and replaced all the gaskets except that one(due to price and scraping all that rtv off). Once I got it back in and started sure enough it leaked. So I have to pull my motor again to do it right

boating is the worlds most expensive hobby. It costs me more per year than my buddy that races

spend the $100 that is cheap insurance

RTV has its place, however its only a little dab at the corners of the gasket where the rear main is split.

as indicated above, you only want to do the job once

It's always a risk/reward thing for me. 1) how much would it suck if this part failed 2) could it leave me stranded if it failed/can I fix it on the water? 3) how much of a pita is it to redo the job? 4) how big of a price difference is it?
Oil pan gasket for an extra $30 would fail all 4 of those for me...
