I have been searching the forums now for awhile and can only find threads related to a bigger engine.. does anyone have any links or suggested threads for a mercruiser 3.0 rebuild? Im doing a complete tear-down, have the service manuals and such. I'm pretty confident that i'll be alright but i'm looking maybe for a thread with some pics or info on a rebuild of this specific engine. Anything would help, thanks!

I would suggest the OEM service manual instead of a "Thread", you will get a lot more accurate information.

What is the SN of your 3.0L? There are OEM manual downloads up in the Adults Only sticky.

Viper,

I just pulled my down myself, 1st time. My advice - just follow the OEM servce manual and you cant go wrong. I had a core plug pop out so decided to strip it right down to check the block. I measured all dimensions as per manual, overhauled the cylinder head, rebuilt with new piston rings, B.E brgs, c/s seal, all new gaskets, etc. I took hundreds of pics as I went so if you need guidance on anything specific let me know on this thread, and if I have it I will post it. I have had the engine running on muffs and all good so far. I changed the engine mounts and it was a bugger to re-align, took about 5 hours, but I was alone so in and out of the boat all the time, I recommend you get an assistant to help ya. You need the alignment tool for this! But it is worth spending the time to get the alignment spot on. I have got the drive back on now but got called away for work, home tomorrow and will run her again tomorrow.

thanks for the advice! I have the service manual already and I was planning on following it; it seems pretty detailed and covers any questions i've had thus far. Did you have your block bored/machined at all? I have rusted cylinders and from what i've been hearing a pressure test is going to be worthless because cracks within the block can still be present although the test comes back normal... (anyone have any comments on the validity of this?) Mrsaundep, any tips when shopping around for the rings, gaskets, seals, etc?

thanks

Re: Mercruiser 3.0 Rebuild- suggested threads?

I rebuilt my 140HP (3.0L) a couple of years ago and bought a complete engine kit off Ebay, about $400. All of the parts were name brand good quality stuff, I don't remember the seller though. Greenbaypartsworld also sells rebuild kits for the 3.0. Make sure to get the 1 piece oil pan gasket as it's much better than the 4 piece set and don't get a high volume oil pump, the std oil pump is what you want.

I had the engine bored to .030, head rebuilt, rods checked, pistons pressed, crank turned 10/10, total machine shop charges were around $400. I did all of the engine assembly, though the shop would have put it together for another $100.

Just because you have rusted cylinders does not mean the block is cracked, water could have came back through the exhaust. My cylinders were rusted from sucking water a couple of times, bad exhaust shutters. If the engine was a runner and wasn't getting water in the oil, you should be fine. If the status of the block is unknown, I would have it pressure tested and magnafluxed, same for the head and manifold if they are in unknown condition. Actually, with water marks in the cylinders, I would carefully check the manifold and riser, and their mating surfaces as this is another area where water could leak back into the engine. If it's in your budget, replacing the manifold and riser might not be a bad idea, especially if you are in saltwater.

I keep getting told by local machine shops that a pressure test on a marine block will NOT guarantee that there are no cracks present although it comes back good; does anyone know the validity of this and if it's just a regularity to say to customers?? I have a good feeling my block is not cracked however I dont want to get everything back together after a good pressure test and find that the block is still cracked..
