My starter went bad so I replaced it. Tested the new starter to make sure it worked properly before installing. Worked. Installed it, turn key and only starter motor spins. The pinion doesn't engage to spin the fly wheel. However, when I was testing it the pinion popped up and spun. Connected wires as such; purple to left post, yellow/red to right (S) post, 3 red one orange to main post. (3rd red wire goes to tilt/trim motor). Any suggestions as to why starter motor just spins and doesn't engage the flywheel to start engine? Thanks!

:welcome: to iboats

Looks like you have it wired right and for the starter to spin the solenoid appears to be engaging. What caused the old starter to go bad? How did the flywheel teeth look like?

The engine hadn't ran in over a year beacuse of an oil leak. Once I fixed the oil leak I charged the battery and tried to start it but it was slow to turn over. Put new battery in and it seemed like the engine wasnt turning as fast as usual but eventually started. Used the boat three times and it started up but not as quick as usual. Then I didnt use it for two weeks and went to start it but the battery was dead. At least that's what I thought. I figured I the bilge pump ran alot since we had lots of rain. Charged the battery, took it to Auto Zone for them to check and they said it was fully charged. Hooked it up to boat and I just hear the dreaded click click. Figuring the starter was bad, I took it off and bench tested it. It turned slow at first, and then nothing. Used jumpers from car battery to main post and s post. Thenhooked up to just s post, nothing, then to motor post, again nothing. Bought new starter with solenoid, installed it, turn key and starter motor runs strong but doesn't engage. Figure starter motor is spinning but pinion isn't popping up to engage fly wheel. Teeth on fly wheel look good. Would bad wiring or bad slave solenoid cause pinion not to pop up to engage fly wheel.
