Mercruiser 3.0L trouble running at 1000-2000 RPMs

The boat is a 2001.

It idles fine and when it is running above 2000 rpms it runs fine. Between 1000-2000rpms it chokes, runs uneven and usually dies. I have to get the boat above 2000rpms quickly for it to run.

Took it by the marina today and an outboard mechanic drove it briefly and said it may be electrical. My plan currently, is to take it back tomorrow.
The marina's I/O guy will get back in town Monday.

Is there anything else I should try in the meantime?

Have you looked to see if the choke plate is actually opened all the way once it warms up?
