Hey guys,
I am a new boater and have been using your knowledge and insight from Google, yesterday I signed up because I have come to trust you guys out of all the forms out there. Also because I have little to no experience with boats and I am repairing/restoring my 1995 Ebbtide 182xl with an Alpha one gen 1 I believe from every thing I have researched. OK so by saying all that here is my question I have a reservoir (square bottle) in the motor compartment that has a hose that goes through the hull at the gimbal but it goes nowhere from there its just hanging out of the back of the boat I have taken the lower unit and gimbal hinge pins out to really see back there and I don't see any connection point? Am I looking in the right place? above the **** cable ? does my lower unit even have a place for the hose to connect? If you guys could help with this I would be forever grateful.

thanks,

I dont think the Alpha1 has capability for an internal fitting. Only have seen them on Alpha GEN II drives does it have the fitting shown on the right side between the middle and top stud.

My Gen2 does not have the ports.

You can tell a Gen1 from a Gen2 just from appearance. One easy way is where the hydraulic rams connect to the outdrive and how the bolts are arranged.

I tried to load the picture but for what ever reason it wont upload so. BT the picture you show looks identical minus the oil port. So then I don't need to worry with this hose anymore? Its useless? correct? , and what I have is a gen 1 even though the transom serial starts with OF (OF484261)

If you had a port you would definitely have a gen2, however, the lack of a port does not indicate anything. As I said, I own a Gen2 with no oil reservoir. Use the pictures above to identify Alpha1 or Alpha1 Gen2.

Previous owner could have swapped in a new engine that had the bottle, or could have changed the entire outdrive, transom and all, to an Alpha1 - like Bt Doc said.

For me the easy way to tell is the skeg. On a first gen it is straight vertical. On a GenII it is swept back.

Did you pull that number off the engine label or the gimble housing? Alpha GenII housings won't work with first gen.

I'm guessing the engine is original and
he's read the serial numbers off of the engine, and somewhere a long the line the gimbal, and drive have been replaced with gen1?

If those are the serial numbers from the engine label then you could have a mix match. Look on the drive and gimbal housing for serial numbers.

ok so I pulled that number from the gimbal housing not the motor I am not sure where to find it on the motor because the sticker on the carb cover is faded.
also I am not sure on where it would be on the drive. but from the pictures above I have a gen 1 due to the positioning of the trim ram connection point.

That's weird, cause your numbers say Gen 2, and if they came from the transom then somethings not right. Point is if that transom IS that serial number, then you have either have a Gen 2, a mixed up assembly of bastardized parts, an incorrect number on the transom, or something else?
