Hay gang. I have a merc 3.7 We all know the stories about blown head gaskets. Yea I got that. Exhaust gasses were pressurizing the coolant and we all know the reset. So here is my question. The head is not in great shape, The valves on #4 are leaking bad (karosene test, Fluid runs right out) So, Can I use a typical Ford 460 head, or is the merc version different? Something about a Cooling hose port not being in the reg Ford head... Is the the case? If the head is exactly the same? What year? My merc is a 1988 but I can only find 1980 - 1986 Ford 460 heads. Does anybody know? Thanks

Mine was in about the same shape. Had hardened seats put in for exhaust valves and replaced #4 valve. worked fine.

I have an old one available.
The spigot can be carefully removed and reinstalled into the auto head.

I have never seen a auto head in person, but wouldn't you have to have a hole cut in the front for the water inlet?

nope, that is usually where a brass or steel core plug would be for an auto application.

Well, Beings #4 (both valves) were so bad and #3 were not that great, I decided to order a remanufactured head (with the port) and a top end gasket set. I'll put the engine back together when I get the parts and update this post then. Thanks for the assistance.

Thanks, I did not know that. One other thing, as I understand it you should go with an OEM Mercruiser head gasket because they are designed specifically for the 470. That is info from some of the hot rod guys that use the 470 block in their race cars. Little more expensive but IMHO worth it. Good luck.
