I have a Mercruiser 3.7L with an Alpha One drive. The motor has been well taken care of but now has a severe lower end knock and loss of power under load. Upper end is good. Check all valves, push rods, compression test ect... I'm mechaniclly inclined so I will pull the motor myself and have the crank turned and install new rods and bearings. 95% sure that's the issue. What I'm not familiar with is how the outdrive disconnects from the motor. from reading my manaul it looks as if you unbolt it and just slide the outdrive off. Sounds too good to be true. Can someone share exactly how the drive connects to the motor and is it a matter of just sliding the drive out. Also it looks like there is enough room to unbolt the motor and slide it forward with out removing the drive. Thanks for reading.

Yes it is that easy!....
However, you must put the helm in foreward.....
There is a splined shaft that fits into grooved coupler...
Of course you will have to unbolt the trim cylinders....
The drive should come off once a year for u-joint service anyway....
Sounds like you are overdue for that .......
You may want to invest in a Merc service manual.....
Welcome to iboats, btw d:).....JK
P.S. Don't waste your time by trying to get the motor out without removing the drive-It ain't worth it!

Thanks....I do have a Merc service manual although it just sounded to good to be true to be that easy. I'll service those U-Joints while it's off. Last owner had the outdrive rebuilt two years ago so hopefully they are in decent shape.

I am new and thanks for the invite

While the motors out it would be a good time to replace the rear mounts too.
