Hi,

I was out on my boat today enjoying the good weather and suddenly something overheated, the engine got very hot and started smoking and the steering became very heavy. I turned the boat off for a little while, let it cool and started it back up, all seemed fine except the power steering had gone and no volts were registering on the volt meter.

Its a 1999 19ft Fletcher GTS with a 3 litre Mercruiser and Alpha 1 drive. Any help would be very much appreciated!

Did you by any chance look at the engine and see if the belt was still on it?

Which belt? The main engine belt was still on if thats what your refering to?

The engine worked fine enough to get me back, even tho I was taking it very slowly.

With a raw water cooled engine, at slow speeds the raw water pump will keep the engine cool. Did you loose a belt or not? If only one was missing, which one, and was it loose or tight?

I don't believe I have lost a belt, I will check again tho. But, how would this affect my power steering?

Does the power steering belt run the alternator? Because since this incident my volt meter has stopped registering any charge. So that would explain both of my issues???

Went down and checked the boat last night and it was the alternator belt that had snapped, this seems like a pretty straight forward job. Hopefully thats all it was!

Thanks for all your help.
