MerCruiser 4.3 1990 Rinker Alpha-1 Gen-1

Performed bellows replacement upper, lower and shift, water hose, water pump impeller, shift cable, all shift components to newer style. Can't get outdrive all the way back in. The lower unit shifter is all the way Clockwise, It aligns perfectly the shifter pointed straight forward. Both upper and lower units joined, can't get the alpha one joined to the gimbal. I stops about an 1.2 inches from victory. I've performed these kinds of repairs/maintenance on alpha-1s and 2s before. what am I missing? THANKS IN ADVANCE.

Ayuh,.... At an inch, 'n 1/4", ya need to turn the motor, or the drive to align the splines into engagement,....
