Have a Mercruiser 4.3 Alpha One I/O with about 75 hours on it. Was out this past weekend. After a stop and restart, when I put it in gear it was like I had pressed the center button on the throttle to rev the engine as the engine revved up but didn't go in gear. I pulled it back to center, then put it back in gear and it seemed to go in gear and be fine. I decided that I must have inadvertantly hit the center button as we hadn't been out long. Anyway, as the day wore on, it didn't seem that we topped out as fast of speed as normal. Didn't think much about it till we tried to ski and didnt' seem to have enough power to pull up even a couple of experienced skiers. When cruising we would be running in the mid 3,000 rpms at about 30 mph top. I think we usually get at least upper 30's to 40 mph and can usually trim it a little to improve that. Was talking to another boating friend who told me I may have spun the hub on the propeller. I checked that and it seems to be ok. Read online could check it out of water by putting it in gear and seeing if the propeller slipped. (propeller will turn one way freely like this and engage the other way). Did that and and it doesn't seem to slip. However did notice something that may or may not be unusual. When I had it in gear in forward, it would engage the engine one way and when you would turn it the "freely" way it would click. When you engaged the throttle in reverse it would engage and freely turn the opposite direction, but I noticed it didnt' "click" when turning the freely way as it did in forward. Is that unusual? Any ideas as to what my problem may have been and/or is?
