Hi, mine died. So I am thinking of going with a Holley red pump instead of the replacement merc pump. Any pros or cons? Other than adding the vent tube and relocation. Thanks
Jeff

What's the matter with the OEM pumps,..???

They Usually fit perfectly,......
You Don't need to build a Mounting Bracket,....
The Plumbing Matches,.....
The Wiring,.. Plugs In,......
Everything is Marine Rated,....

I Can't think of Any down-sides,.........

Re: Mercruiser 4.3 fuel pump

This red pump is marine rated so that is covered - only difference is the vent tube to the best of my knowledge.
As far as why not merc., well cost is one. Also the pumps have been superceded a few times which indicates problems at one time. And a wiring change is needed either way - new merc pump connector is different.

It is a 96 Cobalt 4.3LX.

While here what is the difference between early 96 4.3LX and later 4.3 LXH? Both are 4BBL carbs, pumps are the same, but belt setup is different and other small things. Both 96 Cobalts.
Is one carb bigger than the other? One uses manifold heat for the choke, the other electric.

Just wondering if they are different HP motors or just early and late?
Thanks,
Jeff

don't play with your fuel system. Suck it up and pay for marine parts. You and your boat will live longer.

Re: Mercruiser 4.3 fuel pump

Why isn't marine rated the same, no matter who makes it?
The main difference in pump is that
The merc, you throw away if it goes bad.
The holley is rebuildable and is a vane design which is more tolerant of any debris over the gerotor merc.

Not that any debris should get past the water seperator/filter assembly :)

I would much rather have a mechanical pump, but there isn't a space for one.

Also this boat sits probably 11 months a year, used mainly for snorkling in the keys once a year. Then other small infrequent trips. Not sure if that is hard on the fuel pumps or not?

Any tricks for keeping condensation in the tank down???

Jeff

Re: Mercruiser 4.3 fuel pump

If The holley is marine rated go for it.
What do you need a vent tube for on a electric pump? My 2003 4.3 doesn't have one.
Keep your fuel tank full and use a water seperator.

Re: Mercruiser 4.3 fuel pump

To minimize condensation, is it good or bad to put a tape on the vent while the boat sits on the driveway?

Having the tank full all the time makes the boat less gas-efficient when I need is only 1/3 most of the time per trip.

Re: Mercruiser 4.3 fuel pump

Here is what it says for the pump
"Holley Red Pump 97 GPH Free Flowing Factory Pressure Pre-set at 7 PSI

The Holley fuel pumps meet USCG requirements and are a great reliable fuel supply for any marine engine. Each pump includes a mounting bracket and fuel/fume vent tube. These pumps weigh less than 3 pounds and come with 3/8" NPT inlet and outlet provisions."

Already have a fuel/water seperater on it, I think. Looks like an oil filter?

I thought keeping full was best - similar to my skiis.

Is dry gas a big no no if it is put in and the tank run out that day???

Re: Mercruiser 4.3 fuel pump

Difference between the LX and LXH is a lot more than the belts on the front!

They have different heads (not interchangeable) a different cam and different pistons, to start with a few.

Chris................

Thanks, I was curious. It seemed the LXH had much better topend power.

It should do, it's got 20 ponies more!

On the subject of the fuel pump. Please put a genuine one back on. Nothing worst than trying to work on an engine that someone has 'butchered'.

Chris............

Re: Mercruiser 4.3 fuel pump

JJJ

I used the RED Holley marine pump on my boat because the motor on mine was replaced with a short block meant for fuel injection and did not have an option for a mechanical pump as originally used. This pump has worked almost flawlessly for three seasons of heavy use. My only problem was the pressure relief plunger needed to be replaced once (kit cost $7.00 from ADVANCE AUTO {yes they do sell some MARINE parts if you know the part #'s and look them up on the web site}) An hour later the pump was back in the boat and working perfectly!! As for the vent line, that is in case of an internal pump failure, gas will be dumped to your carb and not into your bilge as I understand it. There is a vent tube connection on the back of my 2V rochester that was hooked up from the factory from the mechanical pump for the same reason. As far as the original being better than the replacemnt, I cant say, but I do think "DONE CORRECTLY" that the Holley is a good option.GOOD LUCK!

Re: Mercruiser 4.3 fuel pump

Use any Merc dealer and the part number for the pump is -805656A2.

The labels "SAE J1171 Marine Parts" is just a marine standard label..
