I am back to square 1!!!:grumpy: Where I thought I had solved the starter disengaging problem, I tried to turn the engine over last night, the starter disengaged, chipped a tooth of the flywheel ring gear again and smashed 2 teeth of the bendix gear on the new starter!!:grumpy: It looks like I do need to brace the back of the starter but there is nowhere on the block for me to fix a bracket.
Has anyone ever retro fitted a brace for the starter where there is no fixing on the block??

Look in a Merc parts manusl for your engine serial or model number; see if there was a bracket installed in the parts diagram. If so see if you can get one. On my '88 OMC 4.3 it came with the bracket and I've installed 2 different marine starters over the years and never had trouble with either one.

So you have this boat and used it with no problems, removed from storage and had a lazy starter and the starter problems started.
How many teeth on the starters bendix drive? Should have 9 .Brackets from summit racing https://www.summitracing.com/parts/nal-354353/overview/

Thanks very much for the info. on the brackets. The starter does have 9 teeth on the bendix gear. There seem to be a number of different brackets available. Ive checked the block again and there is a tapped hole but it is quite far up near the head mounting face. I just need to determine which bracket will fit.
In the mercruiser manual it shows a bracket but only being used on a different style starter to mine. I have a starter with offset bolts but it does have the stud on the back end to allow a bracket to be fitted.
