I've just pulled the pan off my engine, and it looks like at least one of the "reinforcement" pieces needs to be replaced. (Part 14245 and 14246).

Of course, these seem to be no longer available.
(Just like the motor mounts.) Were these superseded by something else? Or, do I have to get something machined to replace them?

Next, I would also like to replace the screws (part 10-72607), which are.. no longer available. What are the specs on the screws - could I go to a hardware store and pick up something equivalent to them?

Thanks,
-V

Howdy,

Well, Doug Russell parts does list those parts...Did you call them?

The screws are pretty standard. you could buy them at any "Screw Place" like http://www.tacomascrew.com/ or equivalent in your area.

Also, since the 4.3L engine is a GM Powertrain engine, you might also try a Chevy dealer.

Thanks Rick! I went to the Doug Russell site and ordered the reinforcements. Hopefully their order system is up to date, I've gone to a couple of places where they say they have something but they call me in a day or so (after I order) saying they don't have it.

The parts listing also gives the specs on the screws: (1/4-20 X 7/8")

You might give them a call just to make sure they can get them......

They sometimes list parts they don't have...

Those part numbers for the reinforcement strips became NLA in 2008 from Mercruiser.
So, unless you find someone that actually has them in stock for some reason, don't expect them just because they are listed online.
99% of the places you buy from online actually stock parts. They direct ship to you from the manufacturer.
Save yourself some time and use the phone and find out within a minute or two if they have it in stock and stop waiting for emails.

Don,

Thanks, it's as you suspected: they don't have them. Which brings me back to one of my original questions:

How do I replace the reinforcements if I can't find the parts? Should I get something fabricated at a local machine shop? I don't have a band saw, and I'm not sure my jigsaw would do the job. Plus, I'm not so good with fine saw work. I'm not quite at this point yet, as I'm confident *someone* has stocked them and its a matter of finding them. This condition won't last forever, though.
How much longer will it be practical to keep maintaining this engine? I know that anything can be maintained practically forever - if you are willing to fabricate your own parts, etc. Some engines were more popular, and there are 3rd party companies that will make replacement parts for them (at a premium cost, of course) for a very long time. Where does this one (4.3) fall?

Thanks,
-V

Re: Mercruiser 4.3L Oil Pan replacement parts.

This makes me wonder if they were not needed in the first place or did the pan get superseded by a pan that doesn't need them?

You might be able to get by without them. I'm in unknown territory here.....I can be taught though ;)

Well, dodged the bullet this time. MarinePowerService had them. But I will post a general question in the "non boating technical questions" section as I have had this sort of experience with a car too.
