Im building a new motor for my boat and i have a few questions. The motor is as follows:

454 block stock bore
forged gm crank
forged gm rods
forged gm pistons
mercruiser 420 intake
holley 800 carb
stainless marine exhaust
088 rectangular port heads
mercruser 420 camshaft crane cams number 132561 Durations 228in 236ex 114seperation
freshwater cooling kit from mrcool.com
raw water pump off a gen iv
electric fuel pump (carter?)
Compession is looking like 9.25:1

NOW the question i have today is what about my oil pan and oil cooler i have a marine 7 quart pan and i had planned to upgrade my oil system to AN lines, running a remote oil filter mounted either on the exhaust (it has a bracket for it) or i could make a bracket and mount the oil filter on the area next to the engine. Im worried about if im running larger lines and a larger oil cooler do i have to worry about pumping all my oil out of the pan and up into the top of the motor and into the cooler and actually running out of oil in the pan?

The lines will take up some oil, but not drain the pan, unless you have huge long lines. But even then it would be only one time. When you change the oil, the oil lines and cooler do not drain or get changed.

yeah thats a little difficult to do when the first time i start it up im supposed to run it for 30 minutes at 2000-2500 rpm to break in the cam.

Don't think the little time it would run in order to circulate the oil and check it will have any affect on the cam.

I'd go with Bond-o's suggestion...run it till there's pressure shut it down, check it then restart it and carry on with no reservation...or not, and guess...I guess.

You'll learn alot when you prime the oil system! Start with 7 & see what the stick shows.
If your really nervous for intial running/break-in start with 8gts. You will use a bunch o' oil during break-in, so check it often!

Like Don said about your lines. Size & length! Your best off keeping it on the motor. IMHP

If you are going with flat tappets, add zinc to your oil!

This is an easy one.

Put the eng in the boat without distributor fill with oil prime it with remote filter and cooler in place.
Fill oil to replace what lines cool and filter hold. And bobs you uncle
