Details, details, details. Did this rig ever work right? Does tbe boat have a dual battery switch, an acr or had any wiring been done that may have created the issue. 12 volt components don't burn out unless the are over powered. So lets have the full story.
Got this over in the Mercruiser I/O thread now...Had the boat for 12 years but it had sat for a couple of yrs while on another boat project(77 Century Sabre) What I have found thru Google is I need an enternal resister coil. My system does not have the inline resister and I have been using parts off of boats I have salvaged. Those had the in line resisters. No dual bat switch and not sure what an ACR is. The coil got hot to the touch for the short time it ran today.
Thanks for any assistance...Stinks living on a lake and not having a working boat
that explains why the coil is burning up. either add a external resistor/resistor wire or change the coil to coil with a internal resistor built in. As for solenoids burning out.......which solenoid?
I have the Accel coil I had taken off in the first place thinking maybe it was bad. Ran it for 10 yrs so its probably good. If not I have the wiring harness from one of the boats I had salvaged. May have the resister wire in that. As for the solenoid there is only one on this boat. Next to the starter on the engine block.
Thanks
I would just buy a coil with a built in resistor (it will be written on the side of the coil). If the solenoid is burning out you will need to check that the solenoid is not getting any power when the engine is running. There is a link between the solenoid starter side large stud and the coil on some boats which boosts the voltage to the coil while the engine is cranking thus bypassing the in-line resistor if this wire is landed on the wrong terminal it will toast the solenoid as it will be getting 8-10v while the engine is running which may not be enough to close the solenoid so it will just slowly cook the solenoid.
I put my original coil(that I thought was bad) back on. Its running. That wire you speak of was bad and I have ran a new one. What you are telling me about it seems to be true. Before I replaced it I would have to use a jumper from the battery to the pos side of the coil when it was cold to get it to start. Now having fuel pump issues.
