Looking at an 83 Mercrusier 470 and need some advice on what to check over on the outdrive. All hoses and boots are in good shape, no noises when prop is turned. Where is the oil checked? And what should I concider if by chance there was water in the oil? Additionally, the motor is said to be fairly new. Has been sitting for several years.. Ive taken some things apart and motor wise looks very clean. Are you able to turn the motor over by hand on the front 3/4" bolt? Any other suggestions? THANKS SO MUCH

Haha you guys are to funny. Ive ready through all the forums, just about took me all night. SO thats what ive heard, just an anchor. Its still so hard to make that kind of decision when I dont have much money anyway for a "real" boat and this one has worked its way for nothing into my hands. Thanks for the clear info on this motor. We'll see ya when the next thing comes by.

Why you think you got it for nothing. You did whoever gave you the boat a favor.

Would have cost over 400 dollars to grind it up.

I could have as many as i want right now for NOTHING.

Be smart get rid of boat it's gonna be a byatch to put a different motor in it.

You will need a whole boat with the right drive and motor to tranfer over everything.

Got a good drive yank it out and anything else you want to keep and bury the boat.

The free boat is always the one that's going to cost you the most. Skip it and keep looking.

Hi Nutts and welcome to this forum. The previous replies seemed a little harsh. Why are you folks so quick to shred his boat when you don't even know what it is? I picked up a 26ft. Tiara cheap with twin 470's. Should I shred this too? What type of boat is it my friend? I bought my Tiara without a sea trial and only did a compression test on the engines before I made an offer (because i am poor). When I got it home I sprayed the sh*t out of the carb w/carb cleaner and put in a 7$ (thats a seven dollar fuel filter you nitwits) fuel filter in it and took a plastic gas tank and bypassed the inboat fuel tank and water seperators and it fired right up after sitting 2 years also. (changed the plugs too) Still working on the starboard but will be happy to let you know when I get that fired up too. There are alot of people loyal to their brands and I think you just ran into a handful of nonmercruiser fans. There are also alot of people here that think the 470 is a great engine that provides decent torque with good gas mileage. Please provide more info on your boat. A compression test will tell you if you need a total rebuild right from the start.

Nutts, I also changed all the fluids before firing too. The drain plug for the oil is to the bottom rear of the block when your facing the harmonic balancer/alt pulleys. I couldnt get to my starboard so I had to use an oil suction pump sold at all the marine supply stores to remove my oil. Dont forget the oil filter too. Marine engines will not start mostly because gasoline turns to gum after sitting too long.

Has nothing to do with the boat artficial, this forum is about the engine and drive. The 470's are not the greatest thing since sliced bread. Mercruier had great hopes that didn't pan out and they gave it up. They knew when to cut and run from that project. That was back in 89.
So, tell me, what has changed to make them so muct better today.
Sure, there are people that have good luck with the 470's, but there are more that do not have a good experience with them.
