Mercruiser 470 Outdrive Grinding In Gear

1977 mercruiser 470 with pre alpha drive. i purchased a new shift control,cables,still grinding. i have spent hours adjusting the cables. it eithers goes into fwd easy and grinds in rev, or the opposite, i also replace the shift kill switch. any i deas ? i just want to put it in gear with no grinding.

In the service manual there is a section on the backlash in the shift shaft going into the drive , IF it is worn beyond this point you will not be able to adjust it correctly

The Plastic Arm From The Lower Cable Is Like Worn Out. It Connects To The Shaft Goin To The Drive. Is That The Peice Your Talkin About
