Merc 470 with water cooled voltage regulator. Last season the battery blew up. Replaced battery, reset circuit breaker, and then when I was running in, I noticed voltage on dash meter was pegging out 16+ when I was running fast. Backed off throttle, voltage went down.

So, this year, I replaced the regulator. Voltage is steady now, but I'm getting the same voltage at the battery leads with a meter whether the engine is running or not. Shouldn't I be seeing a fairly constant 13-14v? Or does the battery have to get below a certain voltage before the regulator kicks on and starts sending a charge? By the way, I have only tested in the yard with the muffs hooked up, so I am only running 800 rpm and briefly bringing it up to 2000 sometimes.

Any help, comments would be appreciated. By the way, I would have done the conversion, but I don't seem to have the clearance so I'm stuck with the stock regulator.

Thanks

Alan
