I have a 2011 Mercruiser 5.0 MPI. Starter works fine but just as engine starts it gives a high pitched noise similar to belt slipping but it not the belt. It is the starter. does it 7 out of 10 starts. three starts it doesn't make any noise. It appears it is aftermarket API Marine 10099HD. Cant imagine a shim issue or gear mesh issue since it does work perfect with no noise at time. any ideas? Are the new quicksilver starters also the small permanent magnet ones like the one i currently have? Funny this one retails for 169 why the OEM is 212 why anyone wouldn't spent the extra 50 is beyond me....

Thanks

Ayuh,...... The new small starters take different bolts,.....

It's possible that one was installed with the old bolts, 'n is shiftin' about, in-place,.....

The old bolts will feel tight, but due to length, won't really be tight,....

I need to check!! bolts appear original. thanks!!!!
On a side note we had a compressor at the plant we spent $75K doing diagnoses work trying to find a vibration. Turned out motor hold down bolts bottomed out. We saw a shim vibrating tried to tighten hold down bolt and it wouldn't go.

My apologies for revising an older thread. I know the community likes to start fresh, however I find myself with the exact issue with a replacement API 10099hd. It worked fine for about 6 starts and then started with the squealing.
I am assuming it’s the bolts. It just seems odd that it would be the cause. I did use the existing bolts. It is my understanding this was a direct replacement for the OEM starter? Could I purchase starter bolts (3/8 -16 x 4 3/8) at an auto parts store - Silver zinc plated grade 8? APIs website has the replacement bolts as 4 3/8s

Thanks
