I have a 5.7 2002 mercruiser EFI that at times wont start until I release the key. I have had mercruiser mech. and private mech. look at it, but no one can tell me what the problem is. After it does start and run for a while it will crank up like a car (very good). this has been going on for about 3 yrs.

can anyone help?

Re: mercruiser 5.7 cranking problem

Your ignition switch may not be sending power to the ignition circuit during cranking. If you have a meter, pull it o ut and test it, if not, run a jumper wire from the battery to the coil. If it starts while cranking, then it was the switch. Remeber you can't shut it off untill you disconect the jumper!
Happy Wakes!

Ditto the above response. I had a similar issue with a car that was the ignition switch. When cranking, the switch would not send power to the ECM but when I released the switch to 'Run' and it would try to fire.

Patch and Dshow, are you saying the key switch? If so, I just replaced that.
I have installed a new 750 amp battery, new altenator and plugs. This is in a sweet looking 2002 Caravelle 232 Interceptor 5.7 mercruiser. Wife and I was going to lake yesterday when it happened again. It finally started but only when I release the key. Today before putting it up I started it and it worked great. It seems like if it sets for a few day, it does its funky thang.
