Mercruiser 5.7 Loss of power/rpm in gear

Took my boat out Friday and started out with no issues. After a couple hours, I noticed I was having trouble getting up on plane a little bit and something didn't seem quite right. Well after attempting to tow a tube I noticed I could not get up to speed and and then engine noise was a bit louder. I took a look in the engine compartment and noticed a small amount of exhaust coming from one side of the y-pipe. I thought the exhaust may have been plugged and it was just backing out one of the seals on the rubber fitting. I could not see exactly where it was coming from.
My first guess was that a shutter had come loose (even though I had just replaced them this season) and clogging the exhaust. I checked them today and they are fine. Although the last set had corroded away and when I had a shift cable replaced this spring they didn't find them in the lower unit. Could they of still been in there and finally found their way down into the lower unit to plug the exhaust?
I am able to get higher rpms at the dock in neutral, but as soon as I put it in gear I can't get over 2000rpm and the boat struggles to get up on plane. It will eventually get there and cruises without any other major symptoms (but can still tell it isn't running smoothly). But top speed is definitely down, just like the weak acceleration.
My plan is just to take it in for service. But I figured I would throw it out there on I-boats in case there was a couple simple things to check out on my own.

What year is the engine? What kind of distributor.

It is a 1983 engine. Not sure what kind of distributor off hand, but the serial number is 6667583. Has a Thunderbolt IV ignition, I'm assuming then it has the Thunderbolt distributor?
