Mercruiser 5.7 MPI with Cool Fuel 3 module - should I add an additional fuel filter?

I have a 2005 Mercruiser 5.7 Horizon MPI with the Cool Fuel 3 module. The fuel module has a built-in fuel filter, but I was wondering if I should add an additional spin-on fuel filter / water separator or not. It seems like a good idea, except I am not sure if this would cause too much of a pressure drop which would in essence put a lot of strain on the fuel pumps. Does anyone have any experience with this?

Ayuh,...... If maintained,... what's there is more than adequate,....

If not maintained,... a dozen filters won't make a difference,.....

Years ago I can recall reading somewhere within Mercruisers literature that Merc does not recommend installing an additional fuel filter with the cool fuel 3's do to possible being to restrictive and changing the vacuum draw levels of the whole fuel system.

I was afraid that might be the case, thank you. I was planning on using the Quicksilver high-capacity filter (part# 8M0079962) which claims to be high flow / low pressure drop filter. I have never had any problems using spin-on filters and they are also a heck of a lot cheaper than the one used by the cool fuel module.

Not to side track the thread, but I have never seen the need for the Gen 3 over the Gen 2. Merc still uses Gen 2 on EC motors with the Alpha drive, and therefore it should also work without issue with the Bravo drive.

Install the old boost pump and then the Gen 2 cool fuel. The regulator takes care of the pressure

Wouldn’t need it. Just make sure the usual paint flaking and blocking it all isn’t an issue any more and it will be fine. Presumably you have the usual standard filter too ?
