Re: Mercruiser 5.7L V8 235HP engine problem

is it reasonable to think the shop that put in the rebuilt Mercruiser V8 230HP that I bought from the previous owner about 15 months ago will help me out with the repair work? I have the receipt from the shop and from the sale of boat with dates. What can you expect when you are dealing with a rebuilt engine and what standards exist for backing up material and labor? I am guessing it's been about 15 times out in salt water and on a few lakes, hard to say how many miles. The hours are about 1 day each time...I called the shop last year before the purchase and they told me there would not be any warranty..on the other hand wouldn't one expect exhaust system to perform a bit longer under normal conditions. I just don't see that I put abnormal use on the boat.

we are all trying to help you out here, it may be able to be saved, you NEED to get any water out of cylinders if there is any. Waiting may be catastrophic. Please pull plugs and try to spin engine.

Something is wrong, water intrusion (unless a cracked block, overheat winterizing) It probably is not a warranty issue. it ran fine for a year and a half, then all of a sudden, there is issues. We will try to walk you through this. It could be a simple fix, but if you continue to let water (if there is any) in the cylinders you may have a huge problem aka, new engine.

If it's been sitting with salt water in the cylinders all this time, that engine is done. It wont turn over due to rust. If the shop didnt put new manifolds and risers on it then well there you go.

you have about 24 hours after salt water ingestion to dry the cylinders and get it running .
Any shop that rebuilds/installs new/rebuilt motors must use new manifolds and risers or there is no warranty.Intake manifolds are known to rot thru under the therm housing. If the PO only did the engine and re-used everyhting else cant see a warranty.

ok, so we pulled plugs and there definitely was water in the engine that probably also caused it to seize...I towed it to the shop that put in the rebuilt engine a year ago since my buddy and I can't really assess what exactly the damage to the engine or components are. I am a bit surprised that with average lifetime of exhaust/riser manfolds of 4-5 years this gave up a bit more than a 1 year after the engine was put in. Again any comments on this situation are appreciated. Hopefully, they can salvage the engine, after all it's only been a few days...

material & labor for the rebuilt Mercruiser v8, 230HP was $3.8K.... I am not sure whether the exhaust manifold or risers were replaced or simply overhauled or nothing was done. I will check the repair bill again, maybe it specifies something but my understanding is that engine seizure from rotting exhaust systems is not uncommon so the rebuilt engine should have been checked and repaired or replaced if there were any signs of a pre-existing condition...apparently Mercruiser engines have knack for that too:

Exhaust Risers - Marine Engines : Boats and Yachts Maintenance, Repairs and Troubleshooting :

BTW, the starter we replaced was an automotive starter, so had no spark arrester on it so the standards of the rebuild probably were not too high...

Ayuh,.... I donno the terms, 'n conditions the PO had with the Shop,...

A New long block motor, includes ONLY a new Long Block,...

A Bobtail drop-in motor, would consist of pretty much everything ya see lookin' back at it,...

Very few folks opt for a Complete Bobtail Motor,...

Re: Mercruiser 5.7L V8 235HP engine problem

looking at the receipt it looks more like the engine block was replaced....it talks about disconnecting multiple items incl. exhaust before reconnecting "305 2 Barrel Mercruiser complete engine with power steering"....weird how someone would drop a $3.K engine into a boat and not have all the vital parts checked out...

First: Never use an automotive starter in a boat. You're looking for an explosion if you do. Second: Marine engines can injest water through the exhaust in a number of ways, such as rapidly shutting down the engine to idle after a high-speed run, or backing the boat up rapidly. Either of those will force water into the exhaust and into the engine. Exhaust flappers are supposed to prevent much of that, but they aren't perfect at it and yours might even be shot. The bottom line is that you're going to need a new engine. Your old one might not even be acceptable as a core for a rebuilt, which will add to the cost of the replacement engine. Sorry. Hy

ok, the engine overhaul looks like $4K, a rebuilt engine about $6K and a new Mercruiser V8 350HP with 3yr warranty runs an estimated $8K with material and labor. The 1994 Maxum 2300sc was about $8K when I bought it last year. Not sure, what to do...any suggestions. I like the boat but with the steep price am also thinking maybe sell and get a bit bigger boat with more space for the wife. But then what do I get for the shell with a bust engine and what am I getting into with the next used boat...??? Any thoughts or suggestions?

Plenty of 350s out there in trucks... Just get one of those, marinize it, drop it in... After that you can decide whether to sell and go bigger or keep it....
