Started my boat for the first time this year. Bought it late last year, so still getting familiar with it. Noticed a whining noise on the port side of the engine. As I got closer, almost seemed like near the back and/or under the engine, but not positive. See video.

The alternator, which is on the other side is nice and quiet.

Not sure if this noise is normal not, but appreciate any thoughts.

P.S. if you noticed the loose hose clamp in the video, that has been since tightened.

Unable to discern the noise, but saying it was on the port side and having a 6.2, I would say its probably the fuel pump

Thanks alldodge. It’s a consistent noise, maybe a better way to describe it would higher-pitched hum or whirring noise, instead of whining.

Anyhow, if fuel pump, do they tend to make this type of noise normally? If you listen to the video, are you hearing the fuel pump?

Is this just happening when the engine is cold ? Perhaps a filter bypass noise.
Other thing might be the power steering pump. Does it change noise when moving the steering ?
Or as said...fuel pump.
I don’t think it’s a noise to worry about. I’ve a video of my mpi running. I’ll go look and see. I think I have the same noise.

I’ve the same noise. I think it’s the fuel pump or perhaps the oil filter bypass...if it has one. I’m more a diesel man and perhaps thinking wrongly.

Yep, that sounds identical to the noise I’m talking about. Hopefully, it’s normal. I came from the world of outboards, so lots of new things for me to learn about with this engine.

Mine has always done it. Had the boat since it was only about 50 hours on it. 700 on her now and 6 years later. Pretty certain it’s normal.
remember and keep an eye on the diz cap with these. Most common issue there is on them.

If the pump does start to whine then it might have a hard time getting fuel, check the antisiphone valve. When the key is first turned ON, that would be the pump

Go buy a cheap stethoscope at harbor freight to help isolate noise. My alternators are located on port sides. Sometimes they whine.
