Mercruiser 7.4LX EFI, water in oil (long story)

Found the nasty surprise from my big block. I have a Cobalt 23 with the original Mercruiser 7.4 LX EFI + Bravo III 1997. I bought it last January with 205 hours on it, raw water cooling, always stored on a lift since new but Now the last two months on a dock in salt water next to my condo. Surface rust on the engine a bit but runned like new with no leaks or oil consumption. I put almost 100 hours on it with everything running tip top all the time. Oil level always ok. A week and a half ago while driving I noticed the bildge kicking in and opened the engine hatch. Lots of steam and water spraying from the circulating pump heavily. Drove it straight to the closest dock which luckily was right next to me, maybe two minutes. The engine didn't over heat at least according to the gauge. Top fitting on the pump was rusted out totally. Changed the pump the next day and fired the boat up. Ran fine and I let it reach the normal 175 temp. Now this saturday tried to take the boat out but it was running kind of shaking + some noise. Checked the oil and found it full of milkshake up to the half way of the stick so big time overfull with water mixed with oil. Obviously didn't start it again but pulled the riser and the exhaust manifold from the port side just to see that they were almost like new. The other surprice was that sometimes earlier the (I guess old ones) manifolds had been leaking as the underside of the heads were heavily rusted with the bolt heads almost gone so pulling the heads would be a pain... The exhaust valves were dry at least on the port side.

The question is, is the engine toast with the water being with the oil for maybe two weeks? It was still running with normal temp and oil pressure when I noticed this. Naturally I need to find out where the water got in but is it even worth messing with this 10 year old engine or just start looking for a replacement long block? I'm in Florida and Rapidomarine has been out of stock with BB's for 6 months. Any good suggestions/ideas? Thanks in advance, it's my first post, I wish it would've been something positive.

Welcome to iboats.....:)
If it sat with salt water in it for 2 weeks, it's toast, IMO....

That much water usually indicates a cracked head or block.....
You could drain the cooling system & pressurize it & listen.....
You'll hear the leak.....
But two weeks with salt water in the bearings = not good.....;)

Thanks for the quick reply. I'm pretty sure there's not too much life infront of that engine with the water in it but then I also heard another opinion that the bearings are not necessarily gone if it's oil and water, not just water. I'm trying to get it to a shop tomorrow so they can change the oil and do a compression test + pressure check the cooling side. If I can get it to run without dropping too much $$ in it it might be worth the trouble to try but I can smell the $$ flying already. What might cause the block or heads to crack? Just internal corrosion? Jasper quoted about $4300 for a 7.4 long block. Any opinions on that price? It's a really nice Cobalt so it's defenetilly worth saving but something like putting a new 496 in it sounds crazy. Way too much money. Don't really feel like downgrading to a 350 either because the boat really flew with the 454. Wonderfull world of boating I guess.

On cars that have this problem, as long as you can get to them before they overheat - chances are 50%/50% on the bottom end.. If it sat with water in it and then restarted, it's likely you pumped water through everything on start up and later mixed it with oil...

It's hard to tell without looking at the bearings, which really means pulling the motor.

Well, the boat's in the shop now and I'm waiting for what they find. They're supposed to change the oil and check the compressions to see what's wrong. If it's something easy, (I doubt it) I'll let them fix it and then just see how long it lasts and start saving for a new engine. The boat was originally available with a 502 but the fuel injection I have probably won't work with one as won't the computer so an easy swap for a 502 is probably out of the question or is it? Anyone have any facts? A long block 502 from jaspers isn't that much more than a 454. Still wondering what the best replacement would be if the worst comes to happen.

FL, what wound up being the problem? Did you replace block?
