Hi, I'm new to iboats, I couldn't find a topic exactly like mine, so please refer me if there is already an ongoing discussion. Now that that is out of the way...

I am having trouble with my Mercruiser 898, it's installed in a '81 seaswirl. The boat will run fine and will rev nicely in my driveway under no load. However, when i took it out last week, it ran nicely for a few minutes but then would start to stumble and would not run under load. I couldn't get it above, say 2500 rpm and it would stumble and eventually die. I could not start it for a while after, but after sitting at the dock for say 30-45 min i was able to restart it. I had this problem last summer, but only after running it at WOT for like an hour. Last summer, i ran it at 4000 rpm for about an hour and then i started having power problems and the boat would not stay running. I corrected what i thought was a possible ignition short, but that has not solved the problem. The engine is timed to 8 degrees BTDC at 700 rpm and the points are gapped to .016". It has a new fuel filter. Any information would be helpful, thanks in advance.

Re: Mercruiser 898 loses power

Welcome to Iboats....the obvious question here is when is the last time it had a complete tune up...new plugs wires cap rotor points? I am running the same engine and have never had any problems with it as it regularly gets tune ups to avoid any problems...Keep posting questions as there are some very knowledgable folks on here that are willing to help you out. Also you might want to check the compression while you are at it.

Good Luck

I replaced the points and rotor towards the end of last year, the cap is of unknown age, although nothing seemed to be burned or corroded. The plug leads are abgout 2 years old, i believe. I will see about checking the compression in the next few days. Thanks.

Start by checking fuel and fuel lines from tank to engine. Clean all screens from inside tank to in line filters. This is the cheapest way to start. I had a problem like this and found a screen inside the tank that would clog when boat ran in the water but it would be ok on ear muffs.

sure enough, i found some crud in the tank screen. Hopefully that solves the problem. Thanks for the advice, folks.

If that doesn't work, check your fuel pumps volume output. It sounds to me like you have a fuel pump that is going away.
