Hi, I'm new to iboats, I couldn't find a topic exactly like mine, so please refer me if there is already an ongoing discussion. Now that that is out of the way...
I am having trouble with my Mercruiser 898, it's installed in a '81 seaswirl. The boat will run fine and will rev nicely in my driveway under no load. However, when i took it out last week, it ran nicely for a few minutes but then would start to stumble and would not run under load. I couldn't get it above, say 2500 rpm and it would stumble and eventually die. I could not start it for a while after, but after sitting at the dock for say 30-45 min i was able to restart it. I had this problem last summer, but only after running it at WOT for like an hour. Last summer, i ran it at 4000 rpm for about an hour and then i started having power problems and the boat would not stay running. I corrected what i thought was a possible ignition short, but that has not solved the problem. The engine is timed to 8 degrees BTDC at 700 rpm and the points are gapped to .016". It has a new fuel filter. Any information would be helpful, thanks in advance.
