Mercruiser 898

Will an Alpha 1 gen 1 replace an 898 drive without alteration? If so with a 1978 305 v8 which gear ratio would be correct 1.47 or 1.62 ?

Ayuh,........ 1.47,...... 1.5/1....... Same Thing.......<br /><br />The 165/1s are a 6cyl. gear,.. or for V8s at High Altitudes..........

Absolutely without a doubt. The '78 Carver I recently acquired with the 898 was fitted with an Alpha 1 Gen 1 last year.
