hey guys, Im having some issues with you engine/outdrive that Im hoping someone can help me with.
95 Rinker 212 OB
Mercruiser 4.3L V6
Mercruiser Alpha 1 Gen 2
Gimbal bearing 1 year old
u joints never replaced (I've owned the boat for 4 years)
Let me start at the end of last season. On the last outing we went on last year, I struck, at very low speed a submerged rock bed. I was just over idle speed and struck one large rock. I check the outdrive and noticed about a quarter size portion of it gone with no apparent damage to the prop. After this i put it on the trailer and winterized it. I did not notice any difference in the operation on the way back to the ramp.
Prior to summerizing this year, a friend and I decided to pull the engine and replace the ring gear on the flywheel. In doing this, we removed the engine cover, and removed the lag bolts that go into the stringer so as to not change the adjustable motor mounts. Obviously the other bolts holding the engine in the rear were removed. with minimal amount of effort using a hoist, the engine slide right off the drive spline where we could rotate it and go about the ring gear replacement. We did not remove the drive. Once this repair was complete, the engine went right back in the way we had pulled it out with absolutely no forcing or resistance.
In the interim I also installed a black fin skeg guard to cover the ding on the skeg.
Blackfin Skeg - Regarding The Outdoors
I took the boat out to insure everything was operating properly. Nothing sounded or felt out of the ordinary at idle speed or while powering up on plane. However, it seems that boat has somewhat of a "drone" to it while operating on plane that also seems to have a small vibration to it. It's weird, sometimes I feel like I can really feel/hear it and other times It seems to be running fine with no noticeable sounds or vibration. I'm starting to wonder if its just in my head.
Thinking that it might be the prop or prop shaft out of balance from the strike I took it to a prop shop today and both were said to be in perfect condition.
Could this be the U joints? What do they sound like when they start to go? Its about the only part of the drive line that I haven't serviced since Ive had the boat. Im pretty sure its not the gimbal bearing as I know what that sounds like all to well.
As always, thanks for the advice in advance. This is such a great community for the diy'er
