I bought my first boat this year because I got an offer I could not refuse. Everything worked great except the up button on the trim control. Yesterday, we went out and after about thirty minutes riding, began to go into a shallow area to let the kids swim. When I went to put the drive up, the pump sounded weird (hard to explain but it was different than when it worked) and quit. Now the drive will not move in either direction.
I came home and did some research on this site and in the service manual. At this point, I know that both trim sending units must be replaced as the wiring outside the transom has no insulation left. Also, while the pump resiveor was pretty full, I topped it off just to be sure.
That being said, I attempted to test the unit per the instructions in the manual for bench testing the motor and solenoid. During the out/up motor test, I used a #12awg wire between the positive (+) solenoid terminal and BLUE/WHITE motor lead terminal (basically connecting the battery directly to the motor). Doing so caused the motor to start, the drive begin to move very slowly, and then the motor slowing to a stop. During this time 3-5 seconds, the wire became so hot that I could barely hold it. The same thing occured for the in/down test.
During the solenoid testing, I basically got nothing. The motor never activated.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
