I bought my first boat this year because I got an offer I could not refuse. Everything worked great except the up button on the trim control. Yesterday, we went out and after about thirty minutes riding, began to go into a shallow area to let the kids swim. When I went to put the drive up, the pump sounded weird (hard to explain but it was different than when it worked) and quit. Now the drive will not move in either direction.

I came home and did some research on this site and in the service manual. At this point, I know that both trim sending units must be replaced as the wiring outside the transom has no insulation left. Also, while the pump resiveor was pretty full, I topped it off just to be sure.

That being said, I attempted to test the unit per the instructions in the manual for bench testing the motor and solenoid. During the out/up motor test, I used a #12awg wire between the positive (+) solenoid terminal and BLUE/WHITE motor lead terminal (basically connecting the battery directly to the motor). Doing so caused the motor to start, the drive begin to move very slowly, and then the motor slowing to a stop. During this time 3-5 seconds, the wire became so hot that I could barely hold it. The same thing occured for the in/down test.

During the solenoid testing, I basically got nothing. The motor never activated.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: MerCruiser Alpha 1 Trim Questions

I went back out tonight and began looking at the electrical system as shown on pg. 5A-34.

First I disconnected the 3-prong connector on the side of the pump and, while the wife activated the controls, metered the continunity between the Red/Pur, Grn/Wht (down activated), and the Blu/Wht (up and trailer activated). Seeing an open circuit in all three instances, I'd say that the 20Amp fuse shown at the up/down/trailer controller must be blown. The problem is that I cannot find it. Any ideas?

Second, I used a jumper wire to send +12V to the connector where the Blu/Wht wire connects to the Trim Limit switch (simulating pushing the trailer switch). The pump turns slowly for 1-2 seconds then stops and whines.

I have started the process of removing the trim pump. My question is what are the odds that it is the motor? Can you replace the motor and not the pump? If so, I am going to try and do so with out removing the hydraulic lines to the pump so that I don't get air in the lines.

Any suggestions?

Re: MerCruiser Alpha 1 Trim Questions

OK... So heres the deal. I have discovered that the pump motor is ok but the pump is shot. Also, the up solenoid works but gives me a very high resistance. I replaced these and everything works like a charm.

Thanks to all of those who took the time to reply. It is help like this that draws people to this site.
