Mercruiser Alpha One Outdrive Question

I will try to explain this problem the best I can. When I shift into forward, as I am pushing the gear shifter forward the outdrive clicks, after pushing the gearshift several inches forward it will engage but by that time it's forward enough that it leaps out of the water because its getting good throttle. Now when I shift into reverse it clicks for approximately a very short distance and pops right into gear. I am thinking this is just an adjustment, I have three cables coming in on the top of the motor, one to the card, one to the outdrive and one from the gear shifter. Which one do I adjust and in which direction?

Go up to the Adults Only sticky at the top of this forum and download the OEM Service manual for you outdrive. There is a section on proper adjustment, and it takes more than turning just one cable to get it right.

I was abel to adjust mine for a season and the problem came back towards the end so I had the shift cable replaced and it has been perfect ever since. They will get old stretched and just plain worn out, once replaced it is like night and day..
