mercruiser alpha - verification of winterization process

This is the first year I've had to worry about winterization (first winter as a boat owner); I want to verify the steps I took.

boat is a '93 maxum 18' with a 4.3LX alpha.

boat was only used twice this summer since it's last winterization. weather around here rarely gets below freezing, but it will get to 28-29 once or twice this winter.

anyways, i'm mainly concerned with the water removal part of the process, so I want to verify this should prevent any freezing issues/damage:

drained block with two valves at bottom of block
drained power steering fluid cooler by removing hose
drained manifolds by removing lower hose from each
drained water pump on front of motor by removing hose
lowered drive, probed all holes, checked for water in drive oil

I also removed the thermostat cover and thermostat and ran the pink RV antifreeze through the thermostat housing, two gallons total. I let the pink stuff come out each drain plug and then closed them all back up.

Basically, I followed the owners manual procedure which came with the boat.

Anything I may have missed where water may have collected? Do I need to worry about the antifreeze backing up in the manifolds and getting into the exhaust ports at all, or is this impossible based on what I did? (I have read about fluid getting into exhaust ports via the manifolds but I don't understand how this works).

I ran into one problem, specifically with the thermostat housing. I'll make a seperate post on that issue. in short, i have a six-hose housing, the thermostat was nearly impossible to remove, and I don't seem to have a spacer or O-ring the way the manual depicts. I don't know if I need to replace the housing.

Ayuh,... It Sounds like you've got it Right...
And,...
No,...
The antifreeze can Not back-up thru the manifold into the cylinders,...
Unless the manifolds are compromised...

one followup question.

i remember reading a thread somewhere on here (but can't find it again) that some 4.3's have an extra drain plug in the (intake?) manifold beyond what i listed above.

any ideas on this one?

There are plugs on the exhaust manifolds.

Re: mercruiser alpha - verification of winterization process

my manual called for unhooking the hoses at the bottom of the manifolds. no plugs that i saw in them.

i was referring to some other plug unique to the 4.3 motor, i thought i had read a post on here that there was a "gotcha" plug that most people miss on the 4.3. maybe my memory is wrong.

Ayuh,...

Some Volvos have an intake manifold drainplug, just to the starboard of the T-Stat manifold, facing forward...

Re: mercruiser alpha - verification of winterization process

Hi Winterization thread...
I am a new owner of a 2007 Bayliner with a 3.0L 4 cyl. 135 hp. MerCruiser Alpha. I changed the oil yesterday, but had trouble finding a drain plug on the exhaust manifold. I only saw the blue line drain hose from the exhaust manifold. Is there also a drain plug near where the blue line drain hose connects to the engine? Is there a picture available? I am going by the drawing in the owners manual page 87, which is on the Closed Cooled Models--I think I have a freshwater cooled engine.
Curious,
