Mercruiser 120, Engine # 2219256. I/O # is only partially ledgible but here is what I have,
2186(402)or the last 3 Numbers are(498), or (488)
Just trying to find the model year, any any other pertinent identification numbers. The engine appears to be a GM 153 c.u. (Iron Duke?.) Is this a generally reliable set up or should I take another route. I have the entire unit including cables, harness etc. would like to mount in newer but empty boat. Thank you in advance. John

Hi John,....

Welcome to the forums here at iboats.com........

I don't have a lookup feature to find your #s,....
But,...
With a #, Without a Letter leading the way,....
I'd think that it's an OLD driveline.......

There's Nothing Wrong with Any of it.....
Parts are Still readily available,....
But,.....
It wasn't,+ Isn't much of a Powerhouse........
If you start with a Smaller hull,+ aren't expecting to be pulling skiers, or Running with the Big Boys,.....
I'm Sure it'll work out, just Fine.........

Re: Mercruiser and I/O ID .Model Year

I appreciate your thoughts and time responding. I actually now have both the engine (2219256) and I/O #'s (2186493). Further the trim cylinders utilize only one feed hose per. Interestingly and confusing This unit DOES NOT have the external manual reverse lock lever that I thought was characteristic of older units, only a grease zerk fitting?? The lever I refer to requires the operator to reach over the transom to manually engage the reverse lock. As far as parts availability goes I am more concerned about gaskets, bellows etc. than hard parts. Thinking I am in smaller waters and 35 mph or so is adequate. Unless I get lucky on a larger HP donor boat. Also trying to convince myself that fuel usage may be an advantage? Thanks again for your time. John

If it's That Old,...... You can Forget about waht I said about Parts Availability.............

And,..... To Repower a hull,.... I'd find something Newer/ Better......

You might be able to Part-Out what you have to somebody who's doing a Period Specific Restoration.....

Re: Mercruiser and I/O ID .Model Year

Thanks everyone for the assistance. Another question. The engine is is known sweetheart good runner etc. Can I still retain it and replace the I/O et al with an Alpha I or newer, again everything from a possible donor boat, and still use the 120 engine? It seems to have been used up until very recently in what appears to be the same configuration, exhaust/intake manifold style excepted? I know that it all has to be changed on the transom. As always, your time and expertise are very appreciated. John

You can hang a Alpha 1 gen 1 on the transom of a pre-alpha. I have one on a 71 right now. Not sure about the exhaust manifold and riser. I thought that was the same old stuff used for eons.

the 120 is a great little engine which was made up as far as 84 however your drive seems to be very old, you should have no problems hooking it up to an alpha drive just make sure the gear ratios are set up for the 120 otherwise you are gonna have to replace the two gears to suit the 120.
be sure that the remote control is in good order , i had a 120 few years back and the remote drove me nuts, was badly worn and had a push button for neutral which only worked when it felt like it...

Why not see if the outdrive you have works well?

Or do you know it's bad.
