Howdy boat friends!
Abit of confusion is at hand on my 1983 chris Catalina. Single screw reverse rotation. So the connector from the helm to the engine is bad and needed replacing.. all is good, colors matched up with the exception of an extra hot on the helm side of the plug. I was sent 8 pin plugs.. all good on engine side.. but the helm side has 2 - 10ga hots. Am I to assume that I can tie the hots together on the helm side?

Post pics of your plugs, helm and engine

Where do the two 10ga hots go to?

The two hots come out of the helm side plug. Pics soon
Ok first two are from the helm side and I have clipped and spliced a new helm side. The color code is right for mercruiser 1983. With the exception of the ground and thermostat, I got this extra red wire ( I couldn't find a purple stripe( fused +) on that wire.. the last 2 pics are the motor side... faded but identifiable. I am also replacing this.. but the motor side has only one positive. Hence the mystery. Thanks for your input.

What I'm seeing is a Red/Purple (comes from 50 Amp fuse), and Orange (comes from Alternator) are the 10 AWG. So your wiring should not connect both Orange and Red/Purple together

Your CC is old enough to have a Amp meter and not a voltmeter. The Amp meter requires power to go up and back thru the helm, but since your rewiring, I would take the newer design standards
