Re: Mercruiser Drama

Don't quote me on this but IIRC the older mercs had 5 bolts holding the Y pipe. One hiding up in between the the humps. Been a long time but I think you missed one.

On my 233, the y-pipe was held on by 5 bolts I believe. Four 1" hex bolts around the outside and a single longer allen head bolt in the middle.

Re: Mercruiser Drama

Thanks again to all!! It was much easier when all five bolts are out. The spacing on my flywheel cover and inner transom plate is 13-3/4 " center to center. I am not sure what the guy has in mind to sell me. He has sold me everything I have needed so far at very good prices, used, of course. I sent him digital photos and he said he has what I need. It is unclear whether I am using the steering actuator he has sold me or he has something else. I hope removing the y pipe and inner transom was not a waste of time. Did they not have power steering in 75? Worse case would be put her back together and get a new serpentine belt to fit after I eliminate the power steering.

Re: Mercruiser Drama

I highly doubt you had power steering in your MT. I know mine doesn't, and the 351w or 350 was the largest engine option at the time. To be honest though, I've never felt the need for power steering on my boat, it really doesn't take much to steer it if the trim tab is adjusted correctly.

May I ask why you are going through all of this trouble to swap from Merc to Volvo?

Re: Mercruiser Drama

You have misunderstood or I have not posted correctly. The only thing volvo is the longblock. I got a good deal on the vortec motor and my old motor went south. I know the longblock on a volvo and a merc is the same. When I bought the boat it had a automotive engine that was blown. Everything is mercruiser but I am trying to install late model vortec 2001 fuel injected without buying a late model outdrive. Everything is complete and have all parts except a way to install mercruiser power steering actuator. Since the longblock I have has the late model power steering pump, remote oil filter ect.. I was trying to add the power steering. Just wanted to do all I can while in the middle of the engine swap. Goal is to have somewhat of a worry free boat for a few years. Now that I have the complete engine, outdrive, transom plate ect.. out I will install new gimball bearing and all new boots, providing I can come up with the right inner transom plate. If I can not come up with a inner plate that works I will just do away with the power steering.
