Re: mercruiser engine coupler

all the merc. couplers for 12 3/4 flywheel say that they are for 4.3 & bellow engines. the previous owner prob put a lighter coupler on than what it should have with 400 hp what i'm prob looking for is a coupler that they used on a (86 -87 i think) 454 with alpha drive if they ever used a 12 3/4 flywheel & if not just a 5.7 with a 12 3/4 star flywheel coupler will have to do if i can find one

Nope,.... Yer confused 'bout couplers,.... They're Not horsepower rated,...

The problem yer seein' is from the 12" flywheel,....

'n I donno what yer callin' a "Star" coupler,... I know crank mounted, 'n flywheel mounted, but not Star,...

Couplers are more likely Blown from bad motor alignment, 'n rotten transoms,...
Horsepower don't kill 'em with an Alpha drive,...
There's more fragile parts in the drive that Blow 1st,...

Bottom line is, I donno what you've got, 'n the Only Safe bet is to put back in, what's worked before,...
Lotsa "Gotcha's" in mixin', 'n matchin' ole Merc drivelines,....

Pictures, would no doubt Help,...

Re: mercruiser engine coupler

If it is indeed a 1pc RMS crank, he's probably going to need the conversion coupler to fit the smaller flywheel: 14505A2. Mallory and Sierra versions come up right here on iboats. Personally I'd pull it and check it before I put down my money, though.
