hi guys i need some help. first off my engine was running a little hot so i thought i would change the oil, impellor, and drive unit oil. i thought the reason for it being hot was this. does anyone know of any other reasons the engine could be running hot?

second, after changing all that the water now comes out of the wrong place. it used to come out of the exhaust which is located where the leg meets the hull. now all the water comes out of only the prop. does anyone know what i did wrong, when i put it back together? any insight would be appreciated. thank you

Re: mercruiser engine problem

Exhaust manifolds will get clogged from rust and lime deposits, this will also cause an overheating situation. You don't say how old your boat is, it takes several years in fresh water for the manifolds to block, and less time in salt water.. The only way to check is to remove the riser and look at the water passageways from the manifold to the riser to see if they are restricted.

Is the ignition timing correct? Do you have the correct spark plugs? both of these will cause the engine to run hot, as will a low oil level in the engine.

If you're not getting any water up to the engine now, then you missed the water tube when you put the lower gearcase back on.

What engine are we dealing with here?

Ayuh,.......... Ok,.........

first off my engine was running a little hot
Just How Hot is a little Hot,..??.....
Does the gauge have #s, or just colors,..??.....
Did the motor Over-heat to the point that it Quit,..??.....
so i thought i would change the oil, impellor, and drive unit oil. i thought the reason for it being hot was this.
Ayuh,.......
The Fluids,+ Filters need changing Anyways,.......
And,...... The Impeller is Always the 1st place I head for in an Over-heat situation.........
What did the Take-out Impeller look like,..??.. Was it Complete, or Broke up,..??....
If Broken up,.... Did you Find All of the pieces,..??....
after changing all that the water now comes out of the wrong place. it used to come out of the exhaust which is located where the leg meets the hull. now all the water comes out of only the prop.
Ayuh,..... My thinking here is,....
You've had No water flowing at some point in your troubles,.....
And because of that,... The Flapper is Smoked,+ has fallen down into the exhaust cavity,......
Possibly blocking the relief ports on the gimbel housing..........

Are you boating in Saltwater,... Or, Sweetwater,..??..

the engine was hot enough where i touched it and it hurt. didnt burn me but it was very hot.
the gauges were reading the correct temperature. i forget what it was. the motor did not quit on me at any time.

i changed the fluid and filter. i thought it would be the impeller but after taking it out there was no part of it missing. it was complete.

the water was coming out of the exhaust ok until i changed the impeller. then it started coming out of the prop. whats a flapper? do i need to replace it? i am boating in saltwater.

it looks like you guys are saying that i forgot to put a hose back on when i took it apart, is that correct? that would be the cause of the water coming out of the prop and not the exhaust.

oh one more thing, i ran the motor for about 2 minutes before i realized it was coming out of the wrong place. the motor came a little hot but i was able to touch it without getting burnt.

thanks again for everyones help.
