Reaching out too fellow boaters that might give the some thoughts
Engine is old, 1984 Mercruiser 4 cylinder work horse. Model is 488
Hours is less then 800 original

Bit under powered but runs good, no smoke, does not burn oil , keeping it until it dies .
Outdrive is Alpha 1 .
When engine goes what engine can I use bit larger , that the Alpha drive can bolt on and go
.
As my opening topic says, fires up . idles on ear muffs, at least 15 minutes. , engine sounds good . No misses when idling
Then all of a sudden , bogs down like its choking , idles like it about too stall, ruff- Starving fuel ?? Dies .
Try starting Cranks away not starting, then catches, starts, , but idles bad, same symptoms as it did when it stalled. Within moments dies .

FUEL ? ELECTRIC ?
a part gets hot , causing engine failure ?

points closing after some time of use ? makes no sense ( has regular points not electronic ) ?
Carb , ( 4 barrel Rochester ) could use rebuild, could float cause this problem ?
Just changed fuel filter this morning , ( Dumped fuel in canister , clean ) . I live in Fl always using , boat fuel is fresh. Tank is clean
Plugs were changed few months ago, have not checked as there is little too no water use on engine except running on muffs.
What would cause an engine running good, strong good 15 minutes die ?

What has me puzzled it runs good 15 minutes then dies ???????
Boat is a bare bottom fishing boat. Basic electronics, no trim tabs,
thanks everybody

I think you are having a electrical issue. Change or adjust the points, and see if the coil is getting to hot.

Leave the fuel cap loose. Perhaps the tank vent is plugged

Make sure the choke is opening along with the other suggestions.

Sounds like the tank vent is clogged, if you take the fuel cap off after it dies and it starts right back up that's your answer. the not starting once it dies is caused by the vacuum left in the tank.

Probably going need to stick to the 4 cylinder, maybe newer 3.0

I'm thinking a fuel issue.
How long does it sit before it will start like the first time?
