mercruiser gimbal leaking

I took my boat out for the first time yesterday and it was leaking where the gimbal is. It was coming in pretty good to. Is there something common that goes bad on those for it to do that? I seen a kit to replace all the stuff on the transom should I get it?

1st off I believe this is the outboard motor forum.

Where as you probably have what is called an I/O, or inboard/outboard type.

and

2nd have you removed the outdrive and looked to see what has failed?

There are bellows back there....yours has sprung a leak.

Repair it promptly; water getting in around the U-joints and bearings will cause big $$$ repairs in short order.

once you wait long enough to do the routine maint its no longer routine.
at a minimum now you not only need a bellows and a mounting gasket kit you also need a set of u-joints as well as a gimbal bearing.
if its sltwater I would pull the driveshft out of the upper to inspect the input yoke seal surface.
salt tends to corrode the seal surface and allow the oil in the upper to drain into the bellows and next thing ya know your posting about a set of upper gears.
nice thing about it is the price of the bellows and mounting kit stayed the same.

You need to pull the drive off asap & pump some grease into the ujoints & gimbal bearing & push any water out if you want to try & save them....
It would be helpful if you would post what type of drive you have.......​
