mercruiser impeller problem

I just took my boat out and a loud buzzer sounded and i smelt a burning rubber smell. I pulled one of the water hoses off of the thermostat housing to see if water was flowing and there was no water. The impeller is new this season with just one trip on it so far and it worked great. Can the hose that the impeller sucks the water in from get clogged? Is there any type of screen or filter that I could check? Im pretty sure my impeller is smoked now but it was new so something else must have cause this? any ideas?

the alignment of what would be off? and what is the coupler that you are referring to? Btw the boat is a 2000 supreme inboard v drive. Thanks for any help

Re: mercruiser impeller problem

You didnt mention that in your opening post
Check the seawater impeller again.
Intake screen /clamshell pickup
seacock shut off
inline strainer clogged
belt broken/slipping

The rubber you smelled burning was probably the rubber exhaust hoses due to lack of water. Plugged up exhaust risers could also do the dead.

Re: mercruiser impeller problem

you stated you had V drives. That means straight inboard to me. follow the hose from the thermostat or heat exchanger inlet back,. Should go to a shutoff valve that goes thru the hull. The strainer (if equipped) is usually mounted between the shutoff and the raw water impeller.

yeah its an inboard. Dont see any shut off valve though. The hose comes from the pickup under the boat then goes through the v drive, then to the impeller, there is no valve in between at all.

Thats scary ,should you ever brake a hose . Carry some tapered wooden plugs onboard
but install a seacock valve when you can. All underwater fittings should have seacocks.Toilet, washdowns, etc. Cut open a life jacket or clothes to fill the hole
loke this from IBoats
