Mercruiser IR and alpha one

Can anyone tell me if a mercruiser IR will bolt up in place of a alpha one. I bought a 1984 parts boat thinking it was a alpha one. If it will bolt up is there any difference in performance. They both have the same gear ratio. The only difference I found so far is the pre load pin

The pin dosent make any difference, the ratio`s in the lowers are all the same.Series1 (late,13 spline),R,MR,Alpha1 all interchange
