mercruiser lower unit impeller question

Okay pulled my lower unit today to inspect my impeller, just as i thought i couple of blades are gone and the rest are getting ready to go. Well when i pulled the two sections apart i noticed a large metal looking piece laying on the impeller housing. Now it flakes apart and looks like layers and layers of just deposits, is that possible and another question. My gear ratio is 1.84 with the serial #5218785, my boat is a 68 with the 120 hp inboard. It looks like the outdrive is off of a 470 mercruiser( according to the serial number and the gear ratio) Can anyone help me determine that for sure.


I have had teh boat running on muffs in foward and reverse, not hearing anything sounding like its going to fall apart

Hey Eric
Thanks for the links, I should've known don would've had something there in teh sticky
Reached my hand up into the upper drive section, alot of crud and more of that built up in there. I guess i can take my exhaust tube loose in side and flush it out with water or air. Anyway i should've looked first, thanks for reminding me:facepalm:
