Hi,
I am currently restoring a 1976 Starcraft islander with a Mercruiser 165 (MC-1 outdrive) The engine is shot, and I am going to put a new long block in it's place. What I need help with is the other end of that system. From what I have been reading it seems a pressure test is in order, as well as shifting the outdrive and making sure the ratcheting is correct. Is there any other testing I can perform while the drive is off? Any potential problems to look for?

I will be replacing the impeller and fluid on the drive. For the transom assembly, I am going to install new bellows. Is this all I need to be concerned with? (Provided the drive passes the pressure test!)

Is there anyway to test this drive before I splash it? I Thank you very much for your help!

Re: Mercruiser MC-1 Help

replace all the bellows, shift cable, water passage hose, gimbal bearing, senders, etc... on the transom assy

inspect the transom assy for breaks/corrosion, etc...

scine you are pulling the drive apart for the water pump be sure to pressure test prior to disassembly and note any leaking seals and replace them

you can pull the top cap and check the gears in the upper, the lower would require more disaasembly to inspect

dont forget to pressure test once its all back together bofre you put fresh lube in

not vacuum, it will fail everytime - the yoke seal in the upper is not designed to hold vacuum which is why water in the bellows always enters the drive

you can vacuum test the lower independently of the upper but merc does not recommend it, 15 psi for 10 mins is the pressure test spec

Re: Mercruiser MC-1 Help

agree w/dubs.
see attachment. think i got it from Don S. if i remember right, this was a mercruiser school pdf. it don't show up in the service manual that i'm aware of.

everyones got it pretty much covered. only thing i'll add is that ya might try spinning the upper when it's seperate from the lower. i found a bad brg. that way. didn't feel right and lead to a further inspection of the brgs.
