Well i managed to find the little spring looking lockwasher thingys that sit in the rear engine mounts. "1970 mercruiser prealpha L6 165hp 250ci" In my basket case boat with parts strewn every where there they were. However it's a good assumtion that they were in installed in the boat before someone took it apart. I read "saw" somewhere that that spring spacer should be cut in half to lower the bellhousing that little bit for a proper alighnment. Has anyone seen or heard of this beside me? Was there a mercruiser service bulletin about this? Or should i just assume it's ok because it's probably been in there since 1970 and was ok? My other option would be to put it in like it was and rely on the alighnment tool to tell me a story? Thanks, I know i saw it somewhere i'm going to look to see if i can find it again.

NO matter what you do (i would follow the manuals picture of the correct assembly of the mounts ;)) you will still need to use the alighnment tool

Those 'special washers' go inside the fibre washer on the mounting points of the inner transom plate for the engine mounts to sit on. I posted a picture a while back, I'll see if I can find it...

What I would do on that engine is check the rear mounts very carefully. They are located in the engine bell housing. Because the engine only has a front mount (unlike the V engines which have mounts at the sides). The rear mounts hold a lot of the weight of the engine, and with time they sag. That makes alignment impossible. Easier to just get new ones and put them in before you put the engine in than to put it in and then find you need new ones. (I speak from experience!!)

Thats ok on the pic Chris i have it from before. I know how they go. I guess i'll try just using them without cutting and see what happens on the alighnment. Maybe where there not cut it might make up for the possible "sag". Thanks

Hold on, if you are using the new style mounts, you eliminate the double wound washer completely. You would only use the SPECIAL spacer washer IF the front of the motor can't be lowered enough. No cutting washers any where. Where did you hear about cutting the double lock washer? That is way off base. Even Mercruiser wouldn't come up with something like that!

Here is some more information on the NEW STYLE mounts and the spacers (basically a flat washer)

Here is how you identify the new mounts for sure.
