Re: mercruiser no spark

place a regular 12 volt test light between negative terminal of coil and ground.....should see it turn off and on as points open and close....if this works then you have good primary circuit for coil.....check coil wire if no spark from coil wire then coil is probally bad.......

If your points are grounding out then they are never really opening even when open. IE you have continuity to ground from the points wire to ground when the points are open it means the points are bad or the condenser hooked to the points is bad. Unhook the condenser and test the points. With the points open you might get some residual ohms but it should not be a dead short. Doesn't matter if the coil is hooked up or not. You should be making this test with the power off just using an ohms meter. With the points closed on an analog meter it should peg the needle. My digital reads OL over over limit. Again with the points open the needle should move back to close to zero.

Re: mercruiser no spark

with all the suggestions and chasing voltage and ohms, I just decided to chase all the wires and clean all connections found some that were corroded, and rusted, like the ones on the starter and the alternator.after going through the whole thing, I don't know what I did but I put everything back together and it just started up. go figure.was it just meant for me to stay home and work on the boat all memorial weekend instead of being on the water.

thanks everyone for your suggestions and your expertise, I couldn't of done it without you all thanks again!!!!!
