mercruiser pre alpha (MR) grinding

my drive started grinding going in drive reverse is fine----------wouldent go in when cold, could it be out of adjustment ? or the forward gear needs replaced. my boat is 1979 wellcraft 470 engine pre alpha hours 650 .

Ayuh,... More than likely, the lower shift cable needs replacin'...

i did replace the lower shift cable 3 years ago the drive barley goes in / it does fine in reverse , once it was in gear it dident fall out but it wouldent go in very easy. it dosnt feel like the shoe barley catches the gear. thanks i will look at the cable.
